In Need for Speed: The Run , the player takes on the role of Jackson "Jack" Rourke, who must flee from a crime organization after an incident leaves him with a bad standing. He is directed to participate in "The Run", a massive 3000 mile street racing event across the United States, where he will face off against 200 other drivers and various obstacles.
Players can experience the thrill of underground racing through multiple stops in locations such as Las Vegas, Denver, Detroit, and others. The game features over 300 km of track, making it one of the largest in the series at that time. The social functionality of Need for Speed: Autolog , which tracks progression and compares game stats with other players, is also included.
The Run introduces quick time events, allowing players to exit their car and move on foot, adding an extra layer of challenge and excitement. The driving model combines elements of SHIFT and Hot Pursuit , offering a realistic yet accessible experience. Players can customize their cars with various upgrades, including paint colors and body kits.
The game features an XP system for unlocking cars and events, as well as a Rewind option that allows players to restart from their last checkpoint if they wreck their vehicle or miss an opportunity. The number of Rewinds is limited based on the difficulty level.
Players can enjoy online matches with up to 16 players, where they can party with friends, complete challenges, and participate in various playlists such as Supercar Challenge, NFS Edition Racing, and Muscle Car Battles. The game also includes a reward system called "The Bonus Wheel" that randomly selects rewards.
