In Need for Speed: The Run , the player steps into the shoes of Jackson "Jack" Rourke, who is targeted by crime organizations after an occurrence leaves him with bad standing. He owes large amounts of money and must flee for his life to find a massive street racing event called "The Run". The Run is a 3000 mile race across the United States from San Francisco to New York City. Jack has to beat 200 other drivers to win $25 million, but police and crime organizations will stop at nothing to make sure he never makes it over the finish line.

Players can participate in an underground world of illicit, high stakes racing with stops through Las Vegas, Denver, Detroit, and many locations. The game features a large track of over 300 km, which is one of the largest in the series. Need for Speed Autolog, the franchise's social functionality, also included tracks progression and lets you compare game stats with other players.

The Run has quick time events, making players exit their car and move on foot. These times aren't harsh on players as the races are, allowing chances to pull through. The driving model is somewhere between SHIFT and Hot Pursuit , not too arcade-like or simulator-focused. There are tons of cars, ranging from muscle cars to refined exotics, each presenting a different challenge for the player.

The Run uses an XP system for unlocking cars and events. It also features a Rewind option which lets players restart to their last checkpoint if they wreck their vehicle or miss an opportunity. Rewinds are limited by difficulty level, with more difficult opponents giving fewer rewinds.

With online matches, up to 16 players can play together. They can party with friends, pick a playlist of challenges and complete on every stage of the game. There are different playlists like Supercar Challenge, Muscle Car Battles, and The Underground, each focusing on different car varieties. Players can also use the reward system "The Bonus Wheel", which randomly selects a reward.
