Samurai Shodown V Special is a re-release of the base game, which was the first game in the main series not developed by SNK , but designed by Yuki Enterprise instead. A few problems were corrected in this release, along with the addition of some new features.
The gameplay of Samurai Shodown V Special is similar to the base game, but with some added features such as fatalities and hidden Zetsumei Ougi moves for each character. Players can also use special moves based on rage, including a Rage Gauge that depletes when used excessively.
The game offers an alternative strategy by meditating, allowing players to slow down their opponents' moves or perform Fatal Slashes. The number of backgrounds has been reduced, but the game includes more original ones.
