Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems is a side-scrolling platformer/beat 'em up based on the Infinity Gauntlet storyline from the comics. Adam Warlock calls on the heroes to recover the 6 Infinity Gems before they are used for evil.
You may choose one of five heroes: Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man and Wolverine. Each one has different stats and abilities. (i.e. Spider-Man is agile. Hulk is strong, Iron Man can double-jump with his rocket boots, etc.) Initially you can choose a training area in Avenger headquarters or four levels. As you complete levels, most open up. Each hero can be equipped with gems to boost their abilities in each section. These must be obtained by finding them in the levels.
Gameplay is fairly similar to X-Men-Mutant Apocalypse. Combat is all on a 2D plane. Each hero has basic jumps and attacks and special moves that can be executed with button combinations like quarter-rolls. Enemies include various villains from the Marvel Universe and evil doubles of various Marvel heroes.
Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems was released for the Super Nintendo on November 1st, 1996. It is a Fighting game.

Extracted from the original game manual
In this action-adventure game, players control Earth's greatest heroes as they assist Adam Warlock in a race to find the legendary Infinity Gems before an evil force can claim them. Utilizing Stark Enterprises' technology to locate the powerful artifacts, players must travel to various locations to secure the gems and protect the universe from omnipotent threat.
Story
The Infinity Gems
The Infinity Gems number six: Time, Space, Power, Reality, Soul and Mind. It is said that the being who obtains these six gems will be omnipotent. Beings throughout the universe have struggled to control the gems.
A Call to Heroes
Adam Warlock has sensed an evil force attempting to find the gems. To protect the Earth and the universe, Warlock has contacted the World's Greatest Heroes to help him confront this evil force.
One gem has already been found, and is being used as a basis for locating the others.
The Hunt Begins
Thanks to the advanced super-power computers at STARK Enterprises, they have identified some possible locations of the remaining Infinity Gems. Now they leave for the mortal hunt.
How to Play
Getting Started
•
Check the power switch on your Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Make sure it is OFF before inserting or removing the Game Pak.
•
Insert your MARVEL SUPER HEROES in WAR OF THE GEMS Game Pak into your Super Nintendo Entertainment System and turn the power ON.
•
Watch the introduction and then press START when the title screen appears.
•
You have three options from the title screen. Select GAME START to begin a game, PASSWORD to enter a previous password, or OPTION MODE to adjust the configuration of your buttons and switch the sound between stereo and mono.
•
After selecting GAME START from the title screen, select a stage from the Stage Select screen. Press the control pad up or down to highlight a stage, then press START to choose the option. Select YES to move to the character select screen or NO to re-select a stage.
•
From the character select screen, highlight a character and press START. Select your available items and press START to begin play.
•
To end the game at any time, simply turn the power OFF on your Super Nintendo Entertainment System and remove your Game Pak.
Item Selection
After selecting the stage and your Marvel Super Hero, you will see the Item Select Screen. The number of items you have available to use will appear underneath the item's icon.
Place the cursor on the item you want to use, and press the Y button. Press the B button to cancel your selection and change the gem you selected.

Avenger's Training Center
One of the first stages you can select is the Avenger's Training Center. This training center gives you the opportunity to practice battle techniques, special moves, and Gem Power Moves. You can also get your password for continuing a previous game here.
You will be pitted against a holographic replica of one of the villains that are out to capture the Infinity Gems. Learn attack patterns, timing, and how to chain multi-hit combos here to be more effective in battle.
After you have finished your training battle, you will return to the stage select screen. You can select the Avenger's Training Center as many times as you like.

Captain America
Steve Rogers took the Super Soldier Serum to realize his full human potential and now leads The Avengers. Armed with a Vibranium-Adamantium alloy shield, he fights evil and injustice.
Iron Man
Industrial genius Tony Stark built a life-sustaining armor to escape captors after being injured in Southeast Asia. He has modified the armor's capabilities and uses his power to battle forces that threaten security.
Wolverine
Logan has a skeleton augmented with indestructible Adamantium and a super-healing ability that makes him highly resistant to harm. He is a mutant who severed ties with the Canadian government to join the X-MEN.
Spider-Man
Peter Parker obtained spider-like abilities, including wall-climbing, after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Following the death of his Uncle Ben, he decided to use his powers to become a superhero.
The Incredible Hulk
Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was flooded with radiation while saving a teenager from a Gamma Bomb explosion. He now has the ability to transform at will into an incredibly strong jade giant.

Passwords
Use the control pad to move the cursor to the letter you want to enter, press Y or B to select it, and press START when finished. If the password is correct, you can resume your game; if incorrect, a tone will notify you to change it.
