The Golden Compass is an adaptation of the 2007 movie of the same, which in turn is based on the novel Northern Lights , the first in the His Dark Materials trilogy by British novelist Philip Pullman.
The game is set in a fantastical parallel universe where the soul resides out of the body and lives in the form of animals known as dæmons. The main character, Lyra Belacqua, must navigate through different environments to right the situation after her friend Roger's kidnapping by evil Gobblers and her uncle Lord Asriel's imprisonment.
In typical 3rd-person action gameplay, Lyra needs to use her wits to evade enemies and find a way out. She can collect four special items to escape tricky situations and has limited "courage" which helps in solving puzzles. The game also features a Deception mini-game where she can outwit characters and gain more courage.
Lyra is aided by two other characters during her quest: Pan, her dæmon, and Iorek Byrnison, an armoured bear known as panserbjørne . Pan has different forms that aid Lyra in navigating through the environments, while Iorek provides brute strength and can be equipped with sky armour to increase his health.
Lyra's journal stores information about her quest, key locations, and uses the Alethiometer, a golden compass device that reveals answers to questions. The game features mini-games such as the Divining game, where Lyra needs to match symbols to keep focus centred on the device, and conversations often involve mini-games.
Characters can collect objects that grant new abilities, such as new forms or spells, which aid them in their quest.
