The game takes place in a zombie apocalypse environment, similar to the Dead Island series. The story follows Kyle Crane, an undercover operative sent inside a quarantine zone, where he must choose between completing his mission or helping the survivors. The city of Harran is overrun by a mysterious epidemic, influenced by ancient Turkey. The protagonist can explore the city using parkour and freerun mechanics. The gameplay focuses on melee weapons and crafting items from gathered supplies. The stamina bar prevents continuous hitting, while guns can be used but will attract others. The character's abilities can be leveled up in skill trees for agility, power, and survival. Large groups of zombies can be taken out using projectiles or traps.
The parkour mechanics require precise timing and aim to navigate the city safely. The game features safe zones where zombies cannot enter, which are unlocked by progressing through the story. During the day, the protagonist must scavenge, locate survivors, and explore. At night, the slow zombies become more agile and deadly.
The game's pace changes with the introduction of Volatile creatures that can sprint and chase the player. Traps, sound, and distractions can be used to evade them. A dynamic weather system adds to the challenge. The game becomes harder at night, but experience points are doubled to make progress easier.
Dying Light offers an online co-op mode for up to four players in Be the Zombie mode, where one player-controlled Night Hunter can invade another player's game at night.
The game was updated on 9th February to a free Enhanced Edition version for all platforms through a patch. This enhanced edition replaced the default version of the game.
