The world of robot technology has become a dystopian nightmare as robots across the United States begin to attack anyone and everything. Among the chaos, two humanoid bots, Beck and Call, remain functional. Beck, a combat robot and the latest in the Mighty Numbers line, possesses the unique ability to manipulate Xels, the nanomachines that comprise all robots. Dr. White, Beck's creator, asks him to bring his fellow Mighty Numbers back to their senses and uncover the source of the robot affliction.
Gameplay in Mighty No. 9 is heavily inspired by the classic Mega Man series, with a focus on running and gunning across platform levels while defeating enemies along the way. Beck's basic weapon is weak, but once he has damaged an enemy sufficiently, he can dash into them to instantly defeat them and absorb their Xels. Each enemy type offers different types of Xels that grant Beck temporary power-ups such as healing or increased defense. Additionally, after defeating another Mighty Number in a boss battle, Beck may use their unique Xels to transform and gain new weaponry.
