Spiders SARL is a French development studio founded in 2008 by former employees of Monte Cristo. The studio specializes in action role-playing games, having co-developed Of Orcs and Men with Cyanide in 2012 and developed Bound by Flame in 2014.
The development of
Of Orcs and Men established a unique fantasy universe where players control two distinct protagonists, Arkail and Styx, utilizing a real-time tactical combat queue. This collaborative project focused on subverting traditional fantasy tropes by casting humans as the antagonistic empire. The game's narrative success paved the way for stealth-focused spin-offs centering on the goblin character, while the studio transitioned to solo development.
With
Bound by Flame, the studio expanded its gameplay systems by introducing a deep crafting mechanic and a morality system. Players control Vulcan, a mercenary possessed by a fire demon, navigating a conflict between demonic power and humanity. The game utilized the proprietary Silk Engine, a modified version of Sony's PhyreEngine, to deliver real-time combat featuring distinct fighting stances and magic. Both titles were published by Focus Home Interactive, cementing a long-term publishing partnership. These early releases defined the developer's signature style of narrative-driven, mid-budget role-playing games characterized by complex moral choices and challenging combat mechanics.
