Starfighter 3000 is a remake of the original game, released a few years before for the Acorn Archimedes platform. The new version features more detailed graphics, with all surfaces now texture-mapped and a fogging filter to reduce clipping. The player controls the Predator Mark-IV, a fighter ship capable of space and atmospheric flight.
The game takes place in 3037, where the FedNet Space Corps are sent to the outermost planets to crush small-time warlords. After being assigned to an elite flight group, the player must test cutting-edge technology. The ultimate goal is to gain trust with the population after decades of corruption and warfare.
Gameplay involves controlling the Predator Mark-IV as it navigates through 15 levels in four worlds. The player has limited control over the throttle, but can use a flight stick with thrust controls to boost speed. Upgrading the craft by picking up crystals or combining colors allows for more powerful weapons and better equipment.
One unique feature of the game is using the laser to terraform the map. By firing repeatedly at certain areas, the player can level the terrain, avoiding heavy defense turrets or destroying them. This strategic element adds depth to the gameplay.
The player starts with three lives and earns one every 250k points. Losing all lives means a game over, but the game can be resumed freely from the last savegame.
