Shin Megami Tensei IV

East Mikado is a fantasy land reminiscent of feudal Japan. The protagonist of the game is a young samurai tasked with tracking down the mysterious Black Samurai. It appears that people have been turning into demons because of books handed to them by this enigmatic person. As the hero and his friends investigate, they become involved in a conflict between two faiths, the Mikado church and the cult of Gaia.

The core gameplay is similar to previous titles. The player controls a party consisting of the protagonist and demons that can be recruited by verbal communication during battles. There are no random battles, and all enemies are visible on the exploration screen. The turn-based combat uses the press turn system, emphasizing exploitation of weaknesses. Demon fusion is also present, as well as the ability to increase the hero's attributes manually when leveling up. New elements include experience points for completing side quests or successful demon negotiations, as well as the protagonist learning skills from his party demons under certain conditions.
