Hotel Mario , a puzzle game based on the Nintendo character Mario, was released in 1970 for the Philips CD-i console. The Princess has invited Mario and Luigi to a picnic in the Mushroom Kingdom, but they soon learn that King Bowser Koopa is making over the kingdom into his personal resort and the princess has been kidnapped.
Mario and Luigi must stop him and rescue the princess by closing doors in the hotels. Each hotel stage features 10 levels, although some stages have fewer or more levels than others. Players can close doors by pressing button 2, while enemies will try to open them. Jumping on enemies is possible by pressing button 1.
Behind some doors, players will find a mushroom that allows them to take a hit without dying. If they already possess a mushroom, they will instead find a fire flower that enables the use of fireballs by pressing buttons 1 and 2 simultaneously. This makes it easier to defeat certain enemies, while others can only be defeated with fireballs.
When reaching the top level of each hotel stage, players must close the doors while avoiding one of the Koopalings. Upon successful completion, there will be an animated FMV cutscene, followed by a transition to the next hotel (stage).
The stages in Hotel Mario are inspired by real hotels, such as Morton's WoodDoor-Hysteria Hotel, Roy's HardBrick Hotel, and Lemmy's High-ate Regency Hotel, among others.
