For the Game Boy, PGA Tour 96 offers a unique golfing experience with its licensed courses, playing modes, and graphical presentation. The game is part of the EA Sports golf series, following up from PGA European Tour . Compared to other versions, it stands out with its distinct style and features.
The game features five licensed golf courses: Avenel, Woodlands, Scottsdale, Summerlin, and Sawgrass. Players can choose from Practice, Tournament, or Skins Challenge modes, and up to two players can compete, either together or against AI opponents. Two human players can take turns on one Game Boy, while AI players can be watched playing solo.
Before a game, players can select from four different club sets. Gameplay is played in a top-down view, where club and spin options are set, and the target location marked by a crosshair. The view then switches to a side-on perspective showing the golfer's swing, controlled via a three-click method (start, strength, accuracy). The ball's flight is again seen in the top-down view, while putting is viewed in a close-up of the green with a zoomed-in side-view of the golfer's feet.
