Tenchu: Stealth Assassins is set in 16th century Japan, where you play as either Rikimaru or Ayame, two ninjas employed by Lord Gohda. Your quest begins with eliminating unsavory folk within your lord's domain, but soon faces greater threats such as tengu goblins and oni demons.
The gameplay focuses on stealth and attacking unseen over straight action, similar to the Tomb Raider series. Your goal is not to be spotted, as this will lead to higher scores and better equipment. You can use your grappling hook to navigate the environment and hug walls to remain undetected.
The game features diverse scenery, including Japanese castles and mountain retreats, each with unique opponents and soundtracks. The game engine's cutscenes advance the story and vary slightly depending on which ninja you play as.
