WWF War Zone is the first WWF-based wrestling game to use fully 3D character and environment graphics. The wrestlers can execute traditional punch and kicks, as well as various grapple moves, which the player can perform by pressing a button assigned to initial grapple in a combination with different direction buttons. Commentary, wrestler introductions (with short voice clips), crowd reactions, and full-motion sequences are included.
The game features seven basic gameplay modes, allowing configurations of one to four players. These include training mode, one-on-one, tag team, cage match, weapons match, tornado tag team, and war (elimination free for all). Two additional modes, Royal Rumble and gauntlet, are exclusive to the Nintendo 64 version. The player can also create and customize his own wrestler, taking him through the WWF challenge. The new wrestler finds himself at the bottom of a pyramid, and has to challenge wrestlers situated immediately above him, gradually working his way through to the title. Sometimes previously defeated wrestlers will challenge the player to a "grudge match", which usually consists of special encounters.

Wrestler Name
The wrestler's name initially appears white. As a wrestler scores hits, their name turns different shades of blue. When your wrestler's name is blue, you have an advantage in a tie-up. The darker the color, the greater your advantage.
The Power Meter
•
Green: You're in great shape—try anything!
•
Orange: You're tired. You'll need to mash buttons to escape holds and submissions.
•
Red: You're in danger—you can be pinned! Watch out for finishing moves!

Tips & Maps
Tie-up Mechanics
You win a tie-up if your move's damage minus your tie-up adjust is less than your opponent's move's damage minus their tie-up adjust. Higher damage moves (6, 9, 5, 8, 4, 7) always beat lower damage moves (1, 2, 3) respectively, regardless of the damage calculation.
Finishing Moves
Each wrestler has a special finishing move; some examples include British Bulldog's 'Running Powerslam', Ahmed Johnson's 'Pearl River Plunge', and Bret Hart's 'Sharpshooter'.
Vary your attacks
Don't just pound the punch button or block; master a range of moves and understand each wrestler's strengths and weaknesses to turn the tide of battle.
Please the crowd
Perform enough high damage moves to get the crowd cheering for you, which will give you an opportunity to attack your opponent.
Attack while getting up
Learn to attack as you are getting up to keep your opponent away from you.
Pre-grapple punches
Working a guy with a few punches before grappling can give you the advantage needed to pull off crowd-pleasing moves.
Improve wrestler skills
Have your wrestler beat all game modes to improve their skills.
Bonus damage
Pay attention to bonus damage and learn to use it to your advantage.
Reverse moves
It is possible to reverse certain moves by pressing block at the correct time, but timing is crucial.
