X-Men vs. Street Fighter is a fighting game where characters from the Marvel Comics universe compete against Capcom's own creations. In this game, X-Men characters face off against the heroes of the Street Fighter series.
The X-Men characters are mostly the same as in previous games; three new characters are Rogue, Gambit and Sabretooth. The Street Fighter cast is based on that of Street Fighter Alpha 2; however, some of them have been altered to match the abilities of the X-Men heroes.
The gameplay system is similar to previous games, adding a tag-team feature. The player controls one character at a time, while the other waits off-screen. The starting character can tag in by hitting specific buttons; the tag partner will jump in with an attack and taunt the enemy. Resting characters gradually recuperate their health. The two partners can execute "variable attacks" that depend on button combinations.
The tag team feature has been omitted from the PlayStation version due to memory limitations. This means the fighter cannot heal during a fight since switching out is not possible.
Some differences between the Saturn and PlayStation versions exist. The Saturn version's turbo speed can go up to 8, while the PlayStation version can only go up to 4, even when on the same speed setting. The PlayStation version's combo meter fills faster than the Saturn version's.
The PlayStation version has exclusive Training and Survival modes, supers can be canceled early with new ones linked in, and icons indicate how a round was won. The PlayStation version also has fewer animation frames.
