Putty Squad is a remake of the 1994 SNES game Putty Squad. It has more modern graphics and sound, but still closely resembles the original game in overall design. The player controls the blue character Putty through different levels where he has to free red characters that have been taken prisoner by invading forces.
The gameplay is a side-scrolling platformer with a slower pace, focusing on exploration and puzzle elements to juggle different abilities to reach the captured characters. To complete a level all other blobs need to be freed and then the area can be exited through a door.
As an amorphous blob, Putty has several abilities. He can stretch in four directions, jump, and flatten himself to avoid enemies. His attacks can also be upgraded throughout the game, including punches, electrical shocks, and darts. Putty can absorb items that can be used at a later date, which are restored in a bar on the right side of the screen.
Putty has a limited amount of lives and hearts per life, as well as a time limit for each level. The game also features a map mode where the entire level is shown, and players can unlock levels gradually through a global map screen.
The PS4 version includes all levels from the first game when preordered, providing additional content for players.
