The story begins three years after a brilliant scientist, Dr. Kirk, disappeared while researching a new form of energy. The government that funded his research wrote off the incident as a loss, but it was later revealed that Dr. Kirk had been working on a top-secret project when he vanished. A special forces team is sent to his private island laboratory to extract him and his research, but they soon discover that the lab has become overrun with prehistoric creatures.

Dino Crisis is a survival horror game that follows protagonist Regina as she navigates the treacherous island laboratory. The gameplay is similar to Resident Evil , where Regina must scavenge for supplies, ammo, and keys to unlock new areas. However, in Dino Crisis , Regina will find limited supplies and must use "plugs" to access emergency caches, which are only available in certain numbers. The game features 3D graphics, allowing the camera to rotate or pan, but with limited player control. Enemies can chase and disarm Regina, and even follow her through doors, making survival a constant challenge.
