Kid Icarus is an action-adventure game where Pit , a young angel warrior, must rescue Princess Palutena from the clutches of Medusa. The story takes place in Angel Land, which Medusa has threatened to destroy. Pit's quest will take him through various levels, from the Underworld to Medusa's palace, where he'll face deadly monsters and challenges along the way.

The gameplay involves navigating through vertically outlaid levels, shooting enemies with Pit 's bow, and collecting hearts left behind. The bow can shoot in both forward and upward directions. As Pit progresses, more of the level becomes inaccessible due to scrolling. Falling off-screen results in death.

The levels contain various chambers, including those filled with enemies, power-ups, shops, and areas that replenish health or provide strength upgrades. Pit 's progress is tracked through experience points earned by defeating enemies, which also increase his maximum health.

Hearts obtained from defeated enemies can be used to purchase items and power-ups in the shop. These items include shields, stronger bows, mallets, torches, and others that aid Pit in his quest.
