The story of Gem Smashers revolves around three prehistoric creatures - Bau, Bam, and Bom - who have escaped from a fearsome scientist from outer space. The player takes control of these creatures as they try to rescue their fellow captives.
The gameplay in Gem Smashers is action-packed puzzle fun. The player must destroy gems of different colours using the bouncing creature, which can only destroy gems of the same colour. To achieve this, the player needs to hit specific colour-changing blocks hidden in rocks that must first be broken. Adding an extra layer of challenge are death blocks marked by skulls that the player must avoid.
Gem Smashers is available on the GameBoy Advance and features a range of modes, including story mode with over 100 levels, arcade mode with more than 60 levels, and battle mode for two players. The game also includes three special unlockable modes, as well as a world map in story mode where each section can be completed in any order.
