R-Type is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up game known for its tough and strategic gameplay. You control the R-9 spaceship as it launches a last-ditch effort to repel the evil Bydo empire.
The R-9 comes equipped with a small gun that can only take down small enemies without firing several shots. Holding down the fire button loads up the gun, releasing a large burst of energy that eliminates all but the strongest enemies in its path. Pods will occasionally come flying towards you, releasing an upgrade when shot. The first one is called "The Force", which can be used for protection or as an offensive weapon.
Mastering The Force is vital to surviving in R-Type . It must be used for both protection against bullet clusters and as a remote-controlled cannon to clear the screen from obstacles. Upgrades also give you target-seeking missiles or a bigger main gun. Different colored guns serve different purposes, such as sending laser beams bouncing across the screen or firing straight ahead.
The stages of R-Type are designed in an organic style inspired by H. R. Giger's artwork for the Alien movies. The levels themselves are considered your enemy, with spider-like creatures weaving webs that block your path and intricate tunnel systems to navigate. The game requires a combination of strategy and reflexes, rather than memorization.
R-Type was released on March 19th, 1991 for the GameBoy console in the UK.
