FIFA 99 was the third FIFA title in under a year, offering players a chance to manage a complete season with 42 national sides and 250 club teams from 12 different leagues. Players could choose between a preset Super League, a league of their choice, or design their own cup competition.
The gameplay was enhanced with improved player animations, including new moves such as sliding challenges and close-control trapping. Goalkeepers also had a greater level of human control, making the game even more realistic.
