Mega Man X3 begins with Dr. Doppler creating a new city for Reploids, which would bring about a new era of peace between Reploids and humans. However, something goes awry, and Mavericks start appearing everywhere. It's up to X and Zero to uncover the truth behind this Maverick revolt and put an end to it.
The gameplay in Mega Man X3 is similar to previous titles, with X facing off against various Mavericks. For the first time in the series, players can control Zero , but his movements are restricted to about one third of each level, and he has only one life.

EMERGENCY
Alarm! Alarm! The Doppler research Reploid caused an uprising in Doppler Town. The Maverick Virus broke through the Doppler Anti-Virus and Doppler seems to be the one responsible for it. All previous reports about the Anti-Virus are incorrect. The Anti-Virus has no effect.
Repeat: The Anti-Virus has no effect!
Doppler Town is being overrun by Mavericks. Utopia is coming to an end before it really even starts. The Virus is spreading quickly. The Cain Laboratory is infected. Maverick Hunter units are on highest alert.
Mega Man X and Zero… set yourselves in motion.
