Originally founded as Interactive Studios, the company rebranded to Blitz Games in 1999. Based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, the studio developed numerous licensed titles for consoles and PC, including Frogger (1997) and Chicken Run (2000). The company operated for over two decades before closing in 2013.
Brothers Philip and Andrew Oliver established the studio following their success as independent developers in the 1980s. The developer specialized in co-publishing partnerships and adapting high-profile intellectual properties for major publishers like Hasbro Interactive, Disney Interactive, and DreamWorks.
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the studio demonstrated versatility across multiple platforms, including the PlayStation, Game Boy Color, and Dreamcast. Notable releases from this era included the action-adventure game
Air (2000) and the digital pinball title
Little Mermaid II (2000). To support its multi-platform output, the developer created a proprietary middleware engine known as BlitzTech, which allowed for simultaneous cross-platform game development and became a cornerstone of their production pipeline.
In later years, the studio diversified its portfolio by establishing specialized divisions. These included Volatile Games, which focused on mature-rated content, and Blitz Arcade, dedicated to downloadable titles. The company also invested in educational software and serious games through its TruSim division, showcasing a commitment to utilizing game technology for training and simulation before the studio's eventual dissolution.
