Lego Marvel Super Heroes is an action game that reunites about one hundred and a half Marvel heroes and villains from several Marvel franchises. The player controls the good ones to save the Earth from a team of villains led by Galactus, known as The Devourer of the Worlds. The game features a blocky cartoonish visual style and gameplay.
Game world consists of Manhattan as an explorable open world and a game's hub including known Marvel locales such as the Marvel HQ. Additionally, there are self-standing story mode levels located beyond Earth in the worlds of Asgard, Bifrost, and Asteroid M. Marvel-related buildings in New York can be entered, with each having its own storyline narrated by Deadpool.
At the beginning, available playing characters are Iron Man and Hulk, soon joined by Spider-Man. Other characters become available as you progress through the game and collect Gold Bricks. These bricks can be found exploring Manhattan, completing side quests there, or in story mode levels, unlocking additional characters and bonus levels. Extra outfits and vehicles can be obtained by collecting Character tokens and Vehicle tokens in Manhattan. Other collectibles include Minikits, Deadpool bricks, which provide power-ups and extra features.
Playable characters total to around 150, with more than 100 needing to be unlocked. Each character has their own Super Powers and Super Moves, affecting interaction with the environment and enemy battles respectively. In-game dialogues are voiced by a cast of 27 people.
The game is playable on Wii U without a TV using its GamePad off-tv play feature. In two-player mode, one player can use the GamePad's display while the other uses it to avoid split screen.
