Resident Evil: Revelations returns to the survival horror roots of the franchise, building upon the action-centric gameplay of Resident Evil 5 . The game takes place in 2005, before part five, and after the destruction of the sea-based city of Terragrigia by terrorists using old Umbrella-style B.O.W.s. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield hunt for answers on a mysterious luxury cruise ship known as the Queen Zenobia.
The story is broken into chapters, alternating timelines, with Jill working with Parker Luciani for the BSAA, while alternate segments focus on Chris and Jessica Sherawat, or new BSAA members Keith and Quint. Each chapter aims to gradually wrap together the full narrative.
Exploration in the game takes place in third-person 3D, similar to Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 , but with a focus on traditional survival horror gameplay. Players monitor ammunition, approach puzzles, and choose when to fight or flee from an attack.
Alternating chapters are more action-oriented, resembling the "shooting gallery" segments of Resident Evil 5 . These sections include classic B.O.W. monsters and have more abundant ammunition. The Genesis device allows players to scan environments for hidden items or enemies' data, increasing percentage points.
A new inventory system is introduced, with limitations on weapons and herbs. A weapon upgrade system similar to Mercenaries 3D is present, allowing players to apply upgrades to any weapon or replace them with others. Upgrades can increase firepower, fire rate, clip size, or special features.
Raid Mode is action-focused, where players face waves of enemies and complete stages by killing all monsters and melee-striking an emblem. This mode replaces the Mercenaries mode found in Resident Evil 4 and Mercenaries 3D , with a removal of time limits. Players earn BP to buy upgrades, which are based on results in both Raid Mode and regular story Mode.
The game is primarily played on the 3D screen of the Nintendo 3DS, utilizing the touch-screen for inventory, item details, and the map. Mini-games like unscrewing panels or re-routing current are also present.
A special Mission mode operates like an Achievement system in an Xbox 360 game, unlocking multi-player Raid Mode and special items and circumstances. Missions utilize Street Pass functionality, which may unlock other missions on different 3DSes with active Missions.
