The action is viewed from a traditional third-person viewpoint, with a tutorial mode available to help you get used to the game's various shots, including forehand, lob, and drop shots. Several venues from around the world can be played on, featuring Hard, Grass, and Clay courts.

The game's success also led to an equivalent version on the Game Gear, which allowed two players to share one console or four players to play doubles by linking two machines.
