John Blacksad, a tough New York black cat private investigator, takes on a new case in early post-war America. His latest client, Sonia, brings him in with a heavy burden - her father's mysterious death in a boxing ring. The police rule it out as suicide, but Blacksad isn't convinced. As he digs deeper, he uncovers a web of conspiracies involving drugs, blackmails, and hired guns. The game is played from a third-person perspective, with an action camera that follows the character and changes angles to create a cinematic feel. The player can move the camera slightly off-center to find hidden album stickers, but these are usually only accessible through the main menu. There are four sports-themed albums to collect, each featuring 25 stickers of famous athletes.
Interactions with objects are displayed as icons when John is facing them, and selecting multiple items allows for more precise control. Conversations often have branching storylines based on player choices, affecting Blacksad's character stats and consequences that can be seen at any time during gameplay. There are eight different stats to track, each with its opposite and a percentage bar showing the player's lean.
There is no inventory system, as items are carried automatically by the character. A notebook serves as a makeshift tool for recording information and piecing together clues. By combining knowledge of different details, players can deduce new insights and progress through the story.
Blacksad: Under the Skin tells an original story within its comic book series, not adapting an existing game or narrative.
