True Crime: Streets of LA
In a world where justice is at stake, True Crime: Streets of LA follows the story of Nick Kang, a young Chinese-American detective who has been suspended from the Los Angeles Police Department. With his extreme methods of policing and ability to cause massive damage, Nick is reluctant to help in a case that involves attacks on various venues in the Chinatown district. However, Wanda Parks, the Chief of the E.O.D (Elite Operations Division), requires Nick's assistance, leading him to embark on an investigation that will test his skills. The gameplay of True Crime: Streets of LA is a free-roaming driving and action game similar in concept to Grand Theft Auto III. The structure of the game is mission-based, with most missions initiated following a cutscene that advances the story. However, the player can continue playing through the chapter even if they fail a mission, leading to branching paths and optional missions. The goal is to eventually succeed in all the main missions to complete the whole chapter. The gameplay involves driving freely through the 240 square miles of Los Angeles, hijacking any car on the street, and engaging in third-person shooting, fighting, and stealth sequences. Nick can drive anywhere, firing his weapon while in an open-top vehicle and aiming at targets. The player can also opt for exploring the city on foot, where they will be contacted by other police officers about various street crimes. Nick must then fight perpetrators, arrest them, knock them unconscious, or kill them to deal with these crimes.
The gameplay is separated into distinct stages, including third-person shooting and fighting sequences that involve hand-to-hand combat using martial arts techniques. The player can punch, kick, grapple, and throw enemies, executing combos by pressing various button combinations consecutively. Both shooting and fighting stages have destructible environments, adding to the game's intensity.
The stealth missions require Nick to traverse a hostile area without attracting attention, with the mission failing if an enemy is discovered or shortly after. The player can choose to kill enemies or knock them down, earning "good cop" points for the latter. Depending on Nick's rating in these categories, the storyline branches during later chapters, leading to different endings.
