Formula One 99

Pit-stops are crucial for refueling and changing tires, despite the time lost due to speed limits in the pit lane. Teams balance the time lost by carrying extra fuel against the time lost by stopping to refuel, often opting for one to three stops per race.

Fuel is heavy, and its weight significantly impacts lap times; each ten kilograms of fuel adds about a quarter of a second to a lap. Teams must strategically manage fuel loads, as lighter loads allow for faster lap times and reduce wear on tires and brakes.

Formula One cars use soft, grippy tires that wear out quickly, optimized to last for each leg of the race. There are two types of tires, Dry and Wet, and two compounds, Hard and Soft, with Soft providing more grip but wearing out faster.

Drivers can save precious seconds by driving the pit-in and pit-out roads as fast as possible, while engaging the speed limiter in the pit lane. Choosing the right lap to stop, potentially earlier if stuck in traffic or later if on a clear track, can also be advantageous.

Formula One cars have incredibly powerful brakes, capable of stopping from 200mph in 100 meters, with carbon composite discs operating at around 900 Celsius. Braking hard for a light corner at the end of a long straight can create overtaking opportunities, but requires skill to avoid spinning or running wide.

If Grid Assist is off, you can use the clutch for a race start by holding L2 and R2 to rev the engine, then releasing them when the lights go out.

A driver's strategy should combine aggressive and defensive tactics, balancing the pursuit of a win with the need to finish and score points, as pushing the car too hard can lead to breakdowns.

To succeed in a championship, capitalize on opportunities and rivals' mistakes, recognizing when to apply pressure to force errors.

A good qualifying position is important due to the difficulty of overtaking in Formula One, requiring thorough track knowledge and a car setup tailored to each circuit.

Remember to save both dry and wet weather setups to your MEMORY CARD so you can easily access the appropriate setup from the PitStop Menu if the weather changes during a race.
