Terminal Reality was founded in 1994 by Mark Randel and former Mallard Software employees. The studio developed a diverse range of titles, including the 4x4 EVO off-road racing series and the action-adventure BloodRayne series. They also created the Infernal Engine, a proprietary game engine used for their own games and licensed to other developers.
Following its establishment, the studio first gained prominence with the 3D aerial combat game
Terminal Velocity in 1995. This success led to a fruitful partnership with Microsoft, resulting in the highly successful PC simulation games
Monster Truck Madness and
CART Precision Racing. The developer further diversified its portfolio with the survival horror title
Nocturne, which showcased advanced dynamic lighting and shadow technologies for its time.
Throughout the 2000s, the company produced licensed titles and original intellectual properties, including the vehicular combat game
Roadkill, the side-scrolling shooter
Blowout, and a modern adaptation of
Spy Hunter. One of their most high-profile later projects was
Ghostbusters: The Video Game, which reunited the original film cast for an official continuation of the franchise. Following the release of
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, the studio ceased operations in late 2013. The company's intellectual property and game catalog were subsequently acquired by Ziggurat Interactive, which remastered several of their classic titles.
