Empire Interactive was established in London, England, by Ian Higgins and Simon Jeffrey. The company specialized in publishing and developing games across various platforms, including PC, Amiga, and consoles. It was acquired by Silverstar Holdings in 2006 and closed down in 2009.
The publisher built its early reputation on a diverse portfolio of strategy, simulation, and puzzle titles. Among its earliest successes was the puzzle game
Pipe Mania (1987), which achieved widespread porting and critical acclaim. During the early 1990s, the company expanded into military simulations and sports titles, releasing the tactical armor simulation
Team Yankee (1990), the football game
Gazza 2 (1992), and the military strategy game
Campaign (1992).
As the multimedia and CD-ROM era expanded in the mid-1990s, the publisher distributed licensed properties and compilations. This period saw the release of the platformer
Yogi Bear: Cartoon Capers (1994) and the interactive movie port
Space Ace (1994). To capitalize on its growing catalog, the company also released software compilations, including
Award Winners (1994) and its subsequent follow-up,
Award Winners [Gold Edition] (1994). These releases solidified the publisher's presence in the European retail market, establishing a distribution network that supported its operations for over two decades.
