Doom is an action-packed adventure game that brings together the best of two popular titles: The Ultimate Doom and Doom II . The game boasts a total of six exclusive maps, in addition to most of the levels and enemies from both games.

As players navigate through the 3D environments, they'll encounter familiar foes like demons and imps, as well as some new additions to the Doom II roster. The game's level design is based on the Jaguar version, which means it features some simplifications compared to other releases. However, the PC versions of The Ultimate Doom and Doom II have been specifically adapted for this console, with a different set of modifications.

Doom takes advantage of the Sega Saturn's 32-bit rendering capabilities, resulting in smoother distance shading and more vivid colours, particularly in its coloured lighting. The game also boasts new sounds and music, adding to its overall atmosphere and immersion.

Game Guide



Extracted from the original game manual

You play as a hardened Marine transferred to the UAC facilities on Mars' moon, Phobos, who must survive after an experimental interdimensional gateway unleashes demonic horrors and annihilates your squad. Tasked with securing the perimeter, you are forced to scavenge for heavy weaponry and fight your way through mutated enemies and insane survivors to uncover the truth behind the catastrophe.



Story

The Story So Far

You are a Marine, one of Earth's toughest soldiers, hardened by combat and trained for action. Three years ago, you assaulted a superior officer who ordered his men to fire upon civilians. He was sent to Pearl Harbor for recuperation, while you were transferred to Mars, the home of the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC).

The UAC is a multiplanetary conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for fifty million miles, your days consisted of breathing dust and watching restricted films in the recreation room.

For the past four years, the military-the UAC's biggest supplier-has used the remote facilities to conduct secret projects, including research on interdimensional space travel. They have successfully opened gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing gadgets through one to watch them emerge from the other.

Recently, however, the gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military volunteers entering them have either disappeared or come out completely insane, babbling vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that moves, and finally suffering full-body explosions.

A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos requesting immediate support. They reported that something evil was coming out of the gateways and that computer systems had gone berserk. Shortly after, Deimos vanished from the sky, and all contact with the moons was lost.

You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles, were sent to Phobos immediately. Your orders were to secure the perimeter while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio picked up the sounds of combat, followed by silence. It seems your buddies are dead.

It's Up To You

Things aren't looking too good. You will never get off the planet on your own, and the assault team has taken all the heavy weapons, leaving you with only a pistol. If you could get your hands on a plasma rifle or a shotgun, you might be able to take out a few enemies.

Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod to find more substantial firepower within the station. As you walk through the main entrance, you hear animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you're here. There's no turning back now.

Enemies

From the very first moment you enter the door until the last gunshot of the game, you will be fighting a host of baddies. Some are just regular guys with a bad attitude; others are straight from the gates of Hell.

Some of the monsters you'll face aren't even shown in the manual. Don't say we didn't warn you.

How to Play

WELCOME TO DOOM!

DOOM is a lightning-fast adventure where you are the toughest space trooper to ever avoid sucking vacuum. Your mission is to fight, shoot, and puzzle your way through a hellish, monster-infested holocaust. You must survive to tell the tale by reaching the other end.

Gameplay is simple but seriously challenging. This is an action-filled blast-athon, not a cumbersome adventure game. Success requires both wits and a quick finger on the trigger.

GETTING STARTED

Press Start at any time to access the Main Menu. Use the D-Pad to move the skull icon up or down, then press Left or Right to modify the selection.

When the demo is playing, press Start to display the Main Menu. To access the menu during a game, press Start to pause, then press A to go to the Options Menu. Move the skull icon to the Main Menu option and press A. Pressing Start while the Main Menu is displayed will start a new game.

MAIN MENU

You can play either Ultimate DOOM or DOOM II. Pressing the D-Pad Left or Right toggles between the two games.

Difficulty

You can choose from four difficulty levels:

•

I Am A Wimp

•

Not Too Rough

•

Hurt Me Plenty

•

Ultra-Violence

If you are new to DOOM, start with an easier level to give yourself a fighting chance. You will have plenty of time for the rough stuff later.

OPTIONS

From the options menu, you can perform the following tasks:

•

Music Volume: Use the arrow keys to change the background music volume.

•

Sound Volume: Use the arrow keys to change the sound effects volume.

•

Password: When you finish a level, you are given a password. Write it down! Enter the password to start at the next level. Highlight the number or letter, then press B (or C or X) to add it, or A to delete. Press Start to begin when entered correctly.

•

Configuration: Use the D-Pad to highlight a button you want to change, then press the new button. For example, move the highlight to "Strafe Left" and press X to redefine it. Be careful, as different actions can be assigned to the same button. To return to default settings, move the cursor to "Default" and press Start.

•

Main Menu: Takes you back to the Main Menu.

PLAYING DOOM

MOVING

At first, you might find yourself bumping into walls while demons attack you. Once you master the movement, everything else follows. Hold down X to Run.

USING DOORS, SWITCHES, AND ELEVATORS

To open most doors and operate switches, stand directly in front of them and press B.

PICKING UP STUFF

To pick up an object, just walk over it. You are smart and will know if you need to take it.

COMPLETING A REGION

At the end of each area, there is an exit chamber. Enter the chamber and press the switch inside to exit and head onward. When you finish an area, an Achievement Screen tallies your performance, including hidden regions located, kill ratio, treasure percentage, completion time, and par time.

THE RULE OF CONSTANT RESURRECTION

If you die, you restart the level from the beginning with only a pistol and some bullets. You have no life limit; you can keep restarting as often as you are killed. The entire level is restarted from scratch, and monsters you killed before have returned.

AMMO AND WEAPONS

Different weapons use different types of ammo. When you run out, DOOM automatically loads the correct weapon. You have a maximum limit on the amount of ammo you can carry, listed on the right side of your status bar. Picking up a weapon you already possess also gives you ammo.

•

Small Ammo: Clip, Shells, Rocket, Cell

•

Large Ammo: Ammo Box, Box of Shells, Rocket Case, Bulk Cell

Weapon Types:

•

Pistol, Chaingun

•

Shotgun

•

Rocket Launcher

•

Plasma Rifle, BFG 9000

HEALTH AND ARMOR

Even for a tough trooper, DOOM can be deadly. Whenever you are injured, the screen will flash red and your health will decrease. Keep an eye on your health or you'll end up face down.

Two types of body armor can be found: Security Armor and Combat Armor. Both reduce damage but deteriorate with use and eventually are destroyed.

If you are wearing armor, you only pick up a replacement suit if it provides more protection than what you are currently wearing.

STATUS BAR DETAILS

The status bar indicates your inventory, current weapon, health, and energy/ammo for the currently used weapon.

•

1. Primary Ammunition: Indicates the number of shots remaining in your current weapon.

•

2. Health: Starts at 100%. At 0%, it is time to quit.

•

3. Weapons: Numbered slots show the type of weapon used and those in your possession.

•

4. Your Face: This portrait indicates the direction from which damage came. As you take damage, your face looks like raw hamburger.

•

5. Armor: Helps while it lasts. When it is gone, you may too.

•

6. Key Cards: Shows any keys you possess. There are three colors: yellow, red, and blue.

•

7. Ammo: Shows how much of each type you are carrying and the maximum limit.

MESSAGES AND AUTOMAP



Items & Weapons

The starting melee weapon. Walking over a chainsaw replaces the fist as the current weapon.

A standard sidearm that uses clip ammo.

Shotgun/Combat Shotgun

Delivers heavy damage at close range and moderate damage at a distance. The combat shotgun is double-barreled and sawed-off, offering more firepower but requiring more time to reload.

Chaingun/Submachine Gun/Machine Gun

Directs heavy, rapid-fire streams at opponents, dealing consistent damage over time.

Rocket Launcher

Fires explosive rockets that can damage or eliminate multiple enemies in an area.

Plasma Rifle/Gun

Shoots multiple rounds of plasma energy that fry demon butts, using cell ammo.

The prize of the military's arsenal, excellent for clearing rooms of unwelcome guests with devastating power.

Provides a quick injection of booster enzymes to restore a moderate amount of health.

Includes bandages, anti-toxins, and other medical supplies to make the player feel significantly healthier than a stimpack.

Provides a small boost to health, potentially exceeding the normal 100% maximum.

A rare object that provides a large boost to health, making the player feel healthier than ever.

Combines the defensive power of combat armor with the health benefits of a Soul Sphere.

Spiritual Armor

Provides a little extra protection above and beyond normal armor levels.

A strange orb that makes the player difficult to spot; enemies can still see the player but their attacks become less accurate. Duration is time-based.

Invulnerability Artifact

Renders the player immune to all damage, indicated by a white screen. Duration is time-based.

Includes safety and combat armor types that reduce incoming damage. Armor deteriorates over time and can be replaced only with stronger suits.

Stimpacks/Stimulants

Give you a quick shot of Doping-Enzymes or an immediate injection of enzymes that will make you feel new, or almost new.

Medkits/First Aid Kits

Contain bandages, antidotes/antitoxins and other medical supplies that will make you feel a lot better immediately or allow you to shoot out.

Health Vial/Healing Potion

Gives your health a little boost, possibly even above your initial level of 100% or provides an extra dose of energy.

Magic Armor/Armor

Grants additional protection; comes in security/green and combat varieties, deteriorates with use, and can only be replaced by better armor.

Soul Balls/Blessed Spheres

Rare objects that give your health a significant boost or a huge dose of energy, making you feel healthier than ever before.

Super Balls/Megasphears

Combine the power of battle/combat armor with the advantages/benefit of the Soul Ball/Blessed Sphere.

Cloaking Object/Blurry Spheres

Strange balls that make it hard for enemies to detect you or locate you, though they can still see you at close range; duration is time-limited.

Invulnerability Objects/Immunity Artifacts

Make you immune to all damage or everything until the effect wears off, causing your screen to turn white; duration is time-limited.

Shotguns/Double-barreled Shotguns/Rifle/Combat Rifle

Provide good hits at close range and shoot well from a distance; double-barreled versions fire more bullets but take longer to reload.

Chain Guns/Machine Guns

Fire a direct rain of bullets at the opponent, making them do the cha-cha-chá.

Rocket Launchers/Rockets

Fire explosives that can turn opponents or many baddies to pieces or shred them.

Fire multiple plasma charges or bursts of plasma energy that will fry enemies or cook demons to perfection.

The pride/best of the military arsenal, ideal for getting rid of unwanted guests; requires a cell/battery.

Different weapons use different types (Clip, Grenades, Rocket, Cell); picking up a weapon you already have also provides ammo.

Restorative boxes

These will give you a burst of energy that will make you feel like new...up to a point.

First aid kits

These are even better and include bandages, antidotes, and other medicines, which will make you feel much better.

They provide a slight improvement in your health and you can even exceed the normal 100% level.

Items not very easy to find that significantly improve health. When you find one, you'll feel as fit as a fiddle!

Combine the power of combat armor with the benefits of the soul orb.

Confusion devices

Strange orbs that will make identifying your presence difficult for others. But the enemy will still see you, just their attacks will be less precise. Keep a proper distance and shoot at will. Duration: limited.

Invulnerability devices

Will render you immune to any type of attack. Not bad, until the effect wears off. When you are invulnerable, your screen will be white. This is the price to pay for being a tough one. Duration: limited.

Enemies & Characters

Former Human Sergeants

Similar to former humans but much meaner and tougher. These walking shotguns provide extra holes if you are not careful.

Also known as former commandos, they are tougher than shotgun zombies and drop a cool chain gun when defeated.

Brown creatures that heave balls of fire and take several bullets to die, requiring a weapon better than a pistol.

Gorilla-like creatures with horns and teeth that will rip your head off if you get too close.

Nearly invisible monsters that are difficult to see and target.

Dumb, tough, flying entities that are on fire.

Floating monstrosities that belch ball lightning and have a huge mouth; getting too close results in being toasted.

Large, tough Goliaths that are described as the worst things on two legs since the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Big Daddy bruisers similar to Hell Knights but twice as tough to kill.

Cybernetic demons equipped with a plasma gun, implying that cybernetics might not have been a good idea.

Described as a 'guy' and a 'machine' with a name that fits; killing him is almost as bad as letting him live.

Demons revived with combat gear by their kind, wielding missiles more effective than the player's.

A large, fat target that pumps out fireballs endlessly and takes a lot of hits to puncture.

Spider Mastermind

The source of Arachnotrons, referred to as 'Hi, mom', wielding a super-chaingun instead of a plasma gun.

A missile-launching skyscraper with goat legs.

Nightmare Spectre

A tougher, 'big bad brother' version of the Spectre for those who liked the original.

Former humans you likely knew days ago; they are now hostile opponents.

More treacherous and harder than former soldiers; described as a walking gun that will tear you apart.

Machine Gun Zombie

Zombies equipped with machine guns; dropping them yields a strong weapon for the player.

Vile brown mutant creatures that throw fireballs; they require multiple bullets to defeat.

Ghost

An invisible or almost invisible monster.

Dumb, tough, fiery creatures that fly.

A flying monstrosity with a huge mouth that spits fireballs and toasts players who get too close.

A larger, twice-as-hard variant of the Hell Knight; a fierce brawler.

Cruel Intentions

A unique and difficult type to destroy; killing it is described as almost as bad as letting it live.

Demons resurrected with battle gear, wielding powerful rockets.

Spinnen-Mastermind

An Arachnotron variant armed with a super machine gun instead of a plasma rifle.

A giant creature with goat feet that throws rockets.

Alptraum-Gespent

The evil, big brother of the Gespensch, enjoyed by those who liked the original.

A semi-invisible monster, exactly what you needed for a walk in the park.

These float in the air, belch fireballs, and possess a huge, horrible mouth that will fry you if you get too close.

Tough as a truck and almost the same dimensions as a Golias, these are the worst two-legged creatures since the days of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Known for its name and type, killing it is as horrible as leaving it alive.

Demons re-embalmed with combat units after death, equipped with rockets that are more devastating than yours.
