ESPN NHL Hockey is the latest addition to Sega's NHL 2K series, adding an ESPN license to its graphics and title. The game builds on the previous version, allowing players to perform checks into the benches, pin opponents on the boards, and design penalty killing and power-play strategies. This feature remains unchanged from NHL 2K3 .
A revamped franchise mode is a new addition in this year's game. The system now includes an e-mail system that sends players notices about team injuries, current playoff statuses, and trade deadlines. Even simple words of encouragement are emailed from the team owner.
The gameplay experience has been enhanced with the introduction of two new modes: skills and mini-games. Skills mode re-creates the exhibition competitions held during the NHL All-Star weekend, featuring a variety of challenges such as the hardest-shot competition, a shoot-out relay, and a puck-control challenge.
Players can also participate in various mini-games like pond hockey, mini-rink, shootout, and super-speed hockey. The game also features plenty of unlockables, including classic jerseys, teams, and goalie masks.
