Starting A Game
Insert the Ultima Game Pack into the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and turn the power ON. After the title screen, the basic menu appears. Use the Control Pad to move the quill to your selection. Press Start to accept the selection and move to the next screen.
Menu Options
•
New Game: Select this with the Control Pad and press Start the first time you play.
•
Continue: Choose this to resume a game in progress. You may have up to three games in progress.
•
Credits: Displays a list of the folks who created this game.
•
Scores: Choose this to display a list of the high scores achieved so far.
Selecting Save Positions
Whenever you start from the beginning, select which of the three Save Positions you want to use and press Start.
If you select a Saved Position which already contains a game in progress, you are asked if you want to erase the currently saved game. If you change your mind, press Select to go back to the main menu without erasing a game.
Your Initials
Move the cursor with the Control Pad. You may select up to three letters with the A Button. Press Start to continue.
Difficulty Level
Choose the difficulty level with the Control Pad and then press Start. The only time you can set the difficulty level is at the beginning of a game.
There are three difficulty levels:
•
EASY: The game is less challenging, enemies are less aggressive, and the mayors you rescue cannot be harmed.
•
MEDIUM: Standard difficulty and enemy aggressiveness.
•
HARD: Increased challenge and highly aggressive enemies.
Saving Your Game
The Game Pack has a battery and automatically records the information and scores of your adventure, saving itself at each new level. You can safely turn off the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in the middle of a game and continue later. To resume, select CONTINUE from the opening screen. Be careful if you use NEW GAME to begin another adventure, as selecting an active saved game position will erase all previous data.
Interacting With Items
•
Picking Up Items: Walk over the item to pick it up.
•
Buying Items: Walk over the item in a shop. If you have enough gold to match the price on the sign, the coins are subtracted and the item is added to your inventory.
•
Environmental Objects: Open chests, flip levers, and push moveable items by bumping into them.
Using Inventory Objects
To use an inventory object such as a weapon or magical item, move the white selection box over the item.
•
Press the A Button to put the item into your right hand.
•
Press the B Button to put the item into your left hand.
If there is already an item in that hand, it is replaced and goes back to your inventory. Return to the game and press the A Button to use your right-hand item, or the B Button to use your left-hand item.
Traveling in Britannia
In addition to simply walking from place to place, you may sail the oceans and teleport magically.
Moongates
Moongates teleport you from one location to another. There are several moongates in Britannia, including a rumored place with eight moongates that each teleport you to a different town.
Ships
To get a ship to sail the oceans, you must lie in wait for pirates along the shore, board their ship, and defeat them. Pirates are very tough, so do not try to overpower them when you are weak.
When sailing a ship, use the following controls:
•
A Button: Fire the ship's cannon.
•
B Button: Drop anchor and disembark.
