The story begins when April O'Neil, a reporter friend of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is kidnapped by the villainous Shredder and his goons. The four ninja turtles must fight their way through hordes of Foot Soldiers to rescue April. Along the way, they battle familiar foes such as Baxter Stockman, General Traag from Dimension X, and the evil alien brain Krang, ultimately facing off against Shredder himself.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an action-packed game where up to two, three or four players can take part in the action. The gameplay is similar to a simplified Double Dragon. While most standard Foot Soldier enemies are easy to defeat, some attack with knives or ray guns and are thus more challenging. At the end of each level, players encounter a boss (or two bosses working together) who must be defeated.
The NES version of the game features additional content not present in other versions: two new levels, new bosses, extra music tracks, and various Foot Soldier variations.
