Ayrton Senna is a well-known racing driver who has won the Monaco Grand Prix six times and three Formula One world championships. He was the perfect choice to license a home sequel to the classic arcade racing game Super Monaco GP. The gameplay takes place from within the cockpit, using sprites rather than polygons.
The game offers three main modes: Senna GP, World Championship, and Free Practice. In Senna GP, players can choose between three non-championship circuits with a preliminary race followed by three laps. The World Championship mode is a full 16-race season with two variations: Beginner and Master. In Beginner mode, the player competes in a regular season with the same difficulty level as other modes, while in Master mode, the player starts on a lower-ranked team and must beat drivers from other teams to get the fastest car.
The Free Practice mode allows players to drive on any circuit without worrying about championship positions. Players can choose between two options: Free Run, where they race against the clock, or Image Training, which involves setting lap goals, starting position, and track conditions (dry or wet) for a selected number of laps.
Regardless of the mode chosen, the core gameplay remains the same. Players can set up their controller to choose between an automatic or manual gearbox with 4 or 7 speeds, and compete against 16 drivers. However, if the car goes too fast against an object on the track, it will be instantly wrecked.
