The year is 2142. The player takes control of Conrad B. Hart, a man who has lost his memory. After barely escaping from hostile aliens, Conrad's bike crashes on an unknown planet. Conrad finds himself in the jungle, and from that moment on his quest for survival and his lost identity begins.
Flashback: The Quest for Identity is an action-adventure game that combines elements of platforming, shooting, and problem-solving. It follows a design philosophy similar to Prince of Persia, with a focus on large levels and exploration. The gameplay involves running, jumping, shooting enemies, and exploring the environment. The player can perform various moves, such as jumping, climbing, and picking up objects. Defending himself, Conrad can use his gun to shoot enemies and objects to harm or distract them. Crouching and rolling are essential moves that aid in combat.
Most environments are hostile, but some areas are devoid of enemies. The player must talk to characters, gather information, and complete tasks in an adventure-like fashion. Most versions feature cutscenes with polygonal graphics, while the CD versions use pre-rendered 3D animations.
The game also features voice-overs on the Sega CD version. The game's unique blend of platforming, exploration, and combat makes for a thrilling experience.
