The Union Aerospace Corporation has been experimenting with teleportation technology on Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos. After early successes, something goes wrong. It seems the scientists have opened a gateway straight to Hell. Phobos base is overrun with demonic creatures, and the whole of Deimos simply vanishes. A squad of marines is sent to Phobos, but all except one are quickly slaughtered. It falls to the surviving marine to grab some guns and strike back at the demons.
Doom is a first-person 3D shooter that follows the story of a space marine who must fight his way through hordes of demons to stop them from taking over Phobos base and Deimos. The game consists of distinct episodes, playable in any order, including Knee-Deep in the Dead , which takes place in the Phobos base, and The Shores of Hell and Inferno , which take place on Deimos and Hell respectively.
The gameplay involves navigating through levels, reaching the exit, while fighting off dozens of enemies. Switches and buttons must be pressed to advance at certain points, and locked doors can be unlocked by finding matching keycards or skull keys. The game's engine technology simulates different heights, lighting conditions, and outdoor areas, making the levels more varied and complex.
The game features a large weapon arsenal, with each weapon having its advantages and drawbacks. Players can collect various power-ups, such as medpacks to heal damage, armor to protect from receiving it, and radiation suits to travel over waste without taking damage.
The enemies in the game include former humans corrupted during the invasion, demons in all shapes and sizes, and powerful creatures such as Cacodemons. Each episode ends with a boss battle against one or two of these powerful creatures.
Doom popularized multiplayer in the genre, featuring two different modes: Cooperative and Deathmatch. The game's popularity led to various console ports, but these versions often feature simplified levels and omitted features from the original DOS release.
The Sega 32X version of Doom lacks the final episode, Inferno , which is present in other versions.
